A writer on her military moves

As a former military spouse who is now a federal employee spouse, I have moved quite often. Like a lot of people in the federal community, I relocate from one geographical setting to the next, every year or two or three. That said, I have unpacked my belongings in seven places of residence since 2004. And even though it may have happened a bit too often, each change has been fairly great.

To those for whom the moves have not been 'great,' could you agree they have been interesting? Would you consent to the idea that moving as an active military family member or government employee is a learning experience? Not too many other career groups can maintain such savviness under the pressures of new jobs, eminent moves, constant packing and unpacking.  But, military and government employees become flexible. It is a developed talent. We know a thousand tiring decisions will be made even if we're only unpacking one small kitchen that day. We try not to become too wound up as we decide on minutiae like what will go inside cabinet drawers instead of on some shelves. Also, what should go in that second drawer--utensils or plastic wrap? ... Then we select fifty objects that will be placed directly into storage instead of wasting precious space in our new little kitchens. Sometimes, I feel sorry for the unchosen items. All this thinking is enervating. It makes my brain hurt.

And yet, I'll do it again. I can almost look forward to it.
